Week 1, Wildlife of Virginia: Participants will learn about some of the major wildlife species in our state, including habits, habitats, and fun facts. This session will be classroom style but with hands-on props and examples.

This program is a weekly series of classes focusing on outdoor awareness, wellness, and stewardship. It is offered in partnership with Earthquest Inc., the Orange County Healthy Community Action Team, and the Orange County Litter Control Committee. Participants will meet once a week on Tuesdays for one or two hours (depending on topic) beginning at 5:30pm, usually at Booster Park. Other sites might be used for specific topics. Topics covered will include Wildlife of Virginia, Tracking & Wildlife Sign, Birds of the World, The Outdoors & You, Stewardship, and a Field Day tying together all topics. The registration fee is $50, and the class is open to participants aged 8-12. To register your child, please call us at (540) 672-5435.
Week 2, Tracking and Identifying Sign
Week 3, Birds of the World
Participants will learn the basics of identifying wildlife tracks and sign, including hands on demonstrations of walking styles (gait) and how tracks register.
Earthquest joins our group for an environmental education program, featuring their amazing birds of prey and parrots.
Week 4, The Outdoors & You, 2 Hours
This class will begin with an open discussion about outdoor recreation opportunities to help spark new interests in using wild spaces to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Example activities will include a basic archery lesson, garden yoga, and bucket gardens.
Week 5, Stewardship
Participants will learn about the impact of litter in our wild spaces, to include visual demonstrations of decomposition timelines and water quality impacts.
Week 6, Field Day, 2 Hours
Putting enjoyment and stewardship principles to practice, the group will venture to a wilder environment to hike while looking for wildlife and sign, while actively removing any litter found.
