Adopt a pet?

Pre-adoption screening forms are available on-line or at the Orange County Animal Shelter, located at 11362 Porter Road here in Orange. Please take a moment to fill one out and then come visit all of the wonderful animals up for adoption! All dogs have been vetted including spay/neuter, Heartworm test (treated if positive), worming, vaccinations and a temperament test. All cats have a Feline Leukemia test with negative result, worming, vaccinations and have been spayed/neutered. You are welcome to bring your current pet with you to meet any whom you are considering adopting to ensure a purrfect match. We have both an indoor room with couch and a fenced exercise yard separate from the kennels. Once you have interacted with your new best friend and submitted your application for review, the adoption process will take about fifteen minutes. If approved, you will receive all pertinent medical records, a free 4lb bag of Science Diet food and a free new leash and collar (dogs only; while supplies last). Heavy-duty cardboard cat carriers can be purchased for a nominal cost of $5.

Obtain dog/cat license?

Cats are not required to be licensed in Orange County. Dogs are required to have both a valid current rabies vaccination and a dog tag, which must be renewed every year. Please bring your rabies certificate with you as well as $5 for a spayed/neutered pet or $10 for an intact male/female to either the Orange County Animal Shelter or to the Treasurer's Office located in the Gordon Building on Main Street in Orange. Kennel licenses are only available at the Treasurer's Office. Please note that rabies tags do not count as proof of vaccination as only the certificate shows breed, age, gender and the rabies expiration date.

Obtain information about rabies clinics?

Rabies clinics are held in the spring and fall of each year. The fee schedule is set by the participating veterinarian. Clinics are open to residents of Orange and surrounding counties. Rabies vaccinations as well as canine and feline distemper vaccinations are available. If you would like your pet to receive a three-year rabies shot, please bring proof of prior vaccination. County dog tags (for Orange residents only) are sold on-site at the spring clinic. Please note that dogs are required to be on leash at all times and cats must be either on harness or in an appropriate pet carrier. If bringing a feral cat, please ensure that he/she is safely contained in a trap or transfer cage. Public notice of the date, time and location of each clinic is posted two weeks in advance in the Orange Review and at least one other newspaper as well as on the local radio station WJMA. Fliers are also posted around town. For additional information, please contact the Orange County Animal Shelter at 540-672-1124.
