    OCPR’s next Tai Chi Fundamentals Session begins October 4 and will continue for 8 weeks of classes. Have fun learning graceful, slow moving form of exercise that has ancient roots tracing back into the depths of Chinese culture and philosophy of centuries past. Classes are held at Dogwood Village in the Senior Living Building Wellness Room on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Signups for our ongoing Tai Chi programs are accepted at any time. The registration fee for this program is $95. Open to adults. Pre-registration is required. For more information about Tai Chi, visit our instructor's website.

  3. OCPR Women's Self Defense Class

    October 11, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM @ Town of Orange Community Room

    This program will help educate women about how to protect themselves from assailants. Class will be held at the Town of Orange Public Works Community Room on Warren Street (off of Byrd Street) from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. on October 11, 2016. Pre-registration is required. The objectives of this program are quite simple: 1. Inform and educate women of all ages on life protection & preservation methods; 2. Analyze today’s environment regarding violence against women in society, on college campuses, in our homes, cars, malls, and neighborhoods; 3. Provide sound awareness and avoidance methods so as to not place one’s self in danger inadvertently; and 4. Teach sound, dynamic, easily executed Self-Defense techniques to destroy the assailant if physical life protection measures are necessary. The instructor for this class, Ron Craddock, is a Grandmaster Martial Artist and a 10th Degree Black Belt with decades of experience teaching martial arts.

  4. OCPR Wood Carving Fundamentals

    October 18, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM @ Barboursville Community Park

    This is a beginning level carving class. Students will be taught woodcarving safety; various woodcarving cuts; how to handle woodcarving tools; and sharpening techniques. Afterwards, students will use their new knowledge by carving a small owl. You do not need to bring anything. Carving tools and materials will be available for use during class. However, you are welcome to bring your own tools if you like. For more information about our instructor and her work, visit her website at www.ArtFromTheBark.com. Register for this class on or before Oct. 7 to avoid a $5 late fee, beginning Oct.10 (the following business day). This class will be held at Barboursville Park, and will be held outdoors or indoors depending on weather conditions.

    Throughout the duration of the fall program, children will be taught to confidently explore the world of gymnastics by co-operating with one another and following directions. Gymnastics helps develop motor skills and coordination, as well as basic social skills, such as following directions and taking turns. Lessons learned throughout the program will provide the children with the skills necessary to excel in other sports, social settings, and the classroom. Classes will split into groups that are taught by the different instructors, and there will be four rotations at bars, vault, beam, and floor. Space is limited, don’t wait to register! The class is scheduled to take place at the high school, but this may change if necessary.  We will update any registered participants in that event. THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 7, 2016, BUT THE CLASS MAY FILL SOONER THAN THAT DATE. DON’T DELAY.

    During this class students will be carving a Jack O’ Lantern from a piece of cottonwood bark. You do not need to bring anything. Carving tools will be available for use during class.     OCPR has partnered with Fredericksburg Fury Basketball to offer a basketball clinic program at LGES. Ages 6-10 will practice on Tuesdays from 4-5pm, Oct.25 - Nov.15. Ages 11-14 will practice on Thursdays from 4-5pm Oct. 27 – Nov. 17. This program will teach fundamentals such as footwork, layups, passing, shooting form, ball handling, offense, and defense. Get active and get healthy while improving your game! Pre-registration is required; the registration fee is $40.

  14. OCPR 3rd Annual Office Costume Contest

    October 28, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM @ Throughout Orange County

    Our Annual Office Costume Contest returns for 2016! This event encourages teamwork and fun within the workplace through a light hearted county-wide competition. Interested businesses, organizations, or departments should submit an entry form and begin planning their group costume. There must be a theme to tie your groups' costumes together, and your organization, business, or department must be physically located in Orange County, Virginia. Participating employees are not required to be Orange County residents. For all official rules, please view our rules document. Participating groups will receive a visit from Orange County Parks & Recreation to take an official entry photograph on either Friday, October 28 or Monday, October 31. Entries will be judged by a combination of Facebook vote and official judges' scoring. Winners will receive prizes to include Faye's Office Supply gift cards, trophies, and of course bragging rights! There is NO ENTRY FEE!
