Explore Kayaking
We have partnered with Rapidan River Kayak Company to offer an additional date for our “Explore Kayaking” program. We will hold this class on August 24, 2016 from 10am-2pm. You MUST pre-register your child (Ages 10-15) for this program. Spaces are very limited so don’t delay. The registration fee is $50 per person. Get your feet wet in the world of kayaking! Learn from an American Canoe Association certified instructor. Students will spend time on the Rapidan River getting a practical introduction to Kayaking. Topics covered will include: Kayak Safety, Kayak Strokes & Maneuvers, Self & Assisted Rescues, Types of Kayaks, Care of Equipment, and more!

VDGIF Hunter Education Course

OCPR has partnered with the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries to host a free Hunter Education Course before fall hunting seasons open. Hunter Education courses are designed to teach hunting safety, principles of conservation, and sportsmanship. A dedicated cadre of nearly 1000 trained volunteer instructors works with 170 Conservation Police Officers to train over 14,000 students each year. Since the DGIF is a state agency, these classes are open for registration state-wide. Registration for this class will open on August 11, 2016.  We are placing this notice early to give local citizens a “head’s-up.” We want you to have the best chance to register first. We only have space for 20 students.  Historically, these classes fill VERY FAST. You must register for this course online through the DGIF website: You can search by zip code (22960) to locate the course, but remember it will not appear in the search until August 11. The course itself will be held at the OCPR office on August 21, 2016. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. NO WALK-INS WILL BE ACCEPTED. If you are unable to register online, please visit our office. PLEASE NOTE: Hunter Safety Courses have changed since previous years.  Classes now require a workbook to be completed in advance of the class, and brought to the class with the student.  OCPR has some of these workbooks available (you must show your registration confirmation to our Aug. 21 class in order to receive one).  These workbooks are also available for free pickup from any regional DGIF office, downloaded online, or can be ordered by phone (1-800-830-2268) for a fee.
