Strengthening Families Program
The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a grant funded program housed within the Office on Youth.

There are two variations of the program. A fourteen-week program for families with youth ages 12-16 and a seven-week program for families with youth ages 10-14.  Both programs take a whole family approach and involve parents and youth.  Each session begins with a meal, followed by separate parent and youth groups, and ends with a family group. Personal disclosure is not required and an emphasis is placed on new skills offering more options rather than criticizing old skills or past behavior.

14-Week Program for Families with Youth Ages 12-16

The fourteen-week program uses family systems and cognitive behavioral approaches to increase resilience and reduce risk factors. Evidence based program outcomes include: increased cooperation and social competencies, improved family relationships, and decreased behavior problems.  The program consists of three life skills courses – parenting skills, youth’s social/life skills, and family life skills.

7-Week Program for Families with Youth Ages 10-14

The seven-week program helps families learn to manage emotions, set goals, avoid peer pressure, make better decisions, and create better relationships.  The program helps families recognize their strengths and improves family value.

Upcoming Program Information:

Both of our spring, 2015 programs are coming to a close. Our next program offered will be the seven week 10-14 year old program in fall, 2015.

Each session begins with dinner for the entire family.  Gas station gift cards are provided weekly to each family in attendance to assist with transportation expenses and child care is provided for younger family members.

The Strengthening Families Program is offered by the Office on Youth and is made possible with funding provided by the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth. Established by the General Assembly, the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth is responsible for statewide efforts to reduce and prevent youth tobacco use and childhood obesity.
