Wood Carving Projects
Wood Carving_thumb.jpgOur wood carving programs are back for the summer and fall in partnership with Art from the Bark Studio!  Each project fromthe summer and fall can be taken as an individual program, but together they will form a connected scene with a raccoon, a hunter, and a hound dog. The scene will be accomplished in three carving sessions.  Each one of the sessions can be carved as a standalone piece. You don’t have to take all the classes. The ideas for this project come from Tom Wolfe's books, Country Carving.  That said, our instructor's style is unique, so don’t be surprised if it doesn’t look like the book. The individual prices for the programs are Raccoon: $38, Hunter: $48, Hound Dog: $48.  All materials and wood-working tools are provided during the classes, which will take place at Art from the Bark Studio, 25419 Constitution Hwy, Rhoadesville, VA 22542.  Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 9am-Noon, with specific dates for each program listed above.  To learn more about wood carving, visit our instructor's website.

Tai Chi Fundamentals
OCPR’s next Tai Chi Fundamentals Session begins September 19, 2017 and will continue for 8 weeks of classes (skipping Oct. 31). Have fun learning graceful, slow moving form of exercise that has ancient roots tracing back into the depths of Chinese culture and philosophy of centuries past. Classes are held at Dogwood Village in the Senior Living Building Wellness Room on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Signups for our ongoing Tai Chi programs are accepted at any time during a program. The registration fee for this program is $95. Open to adults. Pre-registration is required.

Basic Hunter Education Coursehunter in tree stand
Completion of a Basic Hunter Education Course is a requirement to purchase a hunting license in Virginia for 12–15 year old and first-time hunters.  It has been a mandatory requirement since 1988.  This course is supported by Orange County Parks & Recreation and hosted at the Town of Orange Community Room on Warren Street, however, it is actually a Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries class and will be instructed by DGIF instructors.  Registration is handled online through a third party system.  Registration opens on September 20, 2017To register, please visit the online registration page.  The class is free, but there may be a fee for the course book depending on how you wish to receive it. OCPR has some free copies of the book available in our office while supplies last. This class will take place Sunday, October 15 from approximately 12 noon-6pm.  As a DGIF class, registration is open state-wide and we cannot reserve spots, please register ASAP if you would like to attend.

Concealed Carry Training Class

Concealed weapons are weapons which are kept hidden on one's person, or under one's control not accessible to view, which is a basic definition. The Sheriff’s Office understands that there are certain requirements that may be difficult for the average citizen to find training or classes that are inexpensive. For this reason, the Sheriff’s Office and Orange County Parks and Recreation have partnered together to offer a concealed carry class at a minimum cost to Orange County Citizens and to those who work in Orange County. The classes are currently being held every other month unless there is not enough interest to fill the class. The training consists of education in the classroom to include safety, laws, shooting fundamentals, storage, maintenance, and legal considerations. Students will also have to show safe weapon handling on the range. Instructors are DCJS Certified Firearms Instructors. For more information about Concealed Carry, please visit the Sheriff's Office page. Class space is limited. All participants must register at least 2 weeks prior to the class date, no exceptions. This class is limited to Orange County residents and those who work in Orange County. Please Note: Completion of training course DOES NOT grant concealed carry permit. Participant must still apply for the permit through clerk of the circuit court of the county or city in which he or she resides. Completion of this class fulfills the handgun competence requirement for the application. A background check will be required for participation. Registration documents are available in the OCPR office or for printout below. It is recommended that interested applicants complete the waiver at the OCPR office because the waiver must be notarized and we have several notaries in the office. As stated above, all documents must be turned in in advance.
