Frequently Asked Questions

Real Estate Taxes

  • Who do I make my check payable to?
    Orange County Treasurer
  • Can I pay by credit card?
Yes.  VISA or MasterCard.  There is a fee of 2.00% (two percent) applied to the total amount of taxes paid.  The fee is added  to all transactions paid by credit card.
  • Why is the old owner’s name on the Real Estate tax bill, and then c/o my name?
By law the Commissioner of the Revenue’s office has to show the owner as of January 1st on the top line. When the property is transferred to a new owner we mail the bill in care of them.

  • What is the notation “Improvements” mean on my bill?
Improvements are anything other than land such as well, septic, house, etc.

Personal Property Taxes

  • I sold my vehicle on February 15, can you adjust the bill?
Orange County does not pro-rate; anything you own January 1st of the year is what you are assessed with.

  • I think my car is assessed too high.
The assessments are calculated in the Commissioner of the Revenue's office. You would need to contact their office with any questions on the assessments at 540-672-4441.
