Personal Property Taxes

Orange County levies a personal property tax on the following types of personal property:

• automobiles
• trucks
• motor homes
• boats
• motorcycles
• trailers
• campers
• airplanes, and
• business personal property.

This tax is assessed by the Commissioner of the Revenue and paid to the Treasurer’s Office.

Orange County does not pro-rate personal property taxes. If you move into or out of Orange County after January 1, you need to contact the Commissioner of the Revenue.

All items of personal property are assessed for the full year if the items are registered with DMV in Orange County on January 1.

Military

Under the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Act, non-Virginia resident military personnel are exempt from personal property taxes if the personal property is titled solely in the name of the service person. Personal property registered jointly with a non-military member is taxable to the jurisdiction where it is garaged.

This return must be filed by May 1st, with the Commissioner of Revenue’s Office, by residents of Orange County.

Rate for 2009

$3.27 per $100 and a Personal Property Tax Relief percentage of 47%.

Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve you of your obligation to pay taxes to Orange County.

The Board of Supervisors sets the tax rates for personal property taxes. This procedure is normally completed in April, when the locality is preparing the total budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
