On an annual basis, in accordance with Virginia law, names of prospective jurors for the upcoming calendar year are randomly selected from lists provided by the State Board of Elections and the Department of Motor Vehicles. Prospective jurors are required by law to complete a confidential questionnaire and return it to the Clerk's Office. Notices or Summons for trials will be mailed, usually three weeks in advance of the trial date.
Jurors must report for jury duty on the date they are called, unless otherwise instructed. You may check on the status of your jury duty by calling the jury duty hotline at (540) 672-6165 after 5:00 p.m., on the evening prior to the trial date.
Jurors will be paid $30 per day of service.
Proper casual dress attire is required for trials.
Additional information can be found in the Answer Book for Jury Service booklet provided with a jury summons.
Selected jurors with scheduling issues for the designed period of service may provide a written request for exemption based on pre-scheduled appointments, vacations, prior engagements, or serious medical issues which would prohibit them from serving. Only the judge of the Circuit Court can excuse jurors from jury duty.
