How do I commend or make a complaint on an Orange County Sheriff's Office employee?
It is the policy of the Sheriff that all commendations or complaints that pertain to the conduct of an employee will be accepted. Complaints or commendations may be received by telephone or in person. If possible, complaints or commendations should be reduced to writing. Complaints should be made to supervisory personnel when possible.
The image of the Sheriff’s Office depends on the personal integrity and discipline of all Sheriff’s Office employees. To a large degree, the public image of this Office is determined by the professional response of the Sheriff’s Office to allegations of misconduct against it or its employees. The Sheriff’s Office must competently and professionally investigate all allegations of misfeasance, malfeasance or nonfeasance by employees and complaints bearing on the Sheriff’s Office’s response to community needs.
Anonymous complaints will be accepted, however, without the proper documentation and interviews, the complaint may or may not be investigated. Anonymous complaints will be investigated only at the discretion of the Sheriff.
As part of the follow up process, persons making complaints by phone, in writing, etc. will normally be interviewed and a written and signed complaint will be prepared.
Every effort shall be made to facilitate the convenient, courteous, and prompt receipt and processing of citizen complaints.
Complaints will not normally be accepted more than thirty (30) days after the alleged incident unless the act complained of is a criminal violation or when the complaining person can show good cause for not making the complaint earlier.
Upon completion of an investigation, a letter will be sent to the complainant indicating the findings of the investigation but the letter will not detail any disciplinary actions taken.
